in my opinion the hobart 140 amp is the best bargain out there for a beginner and will weld anything you will ever need to build for your jeep just fine. get the shielding gas.

Ive had mine since 2006. love, it. ive built many bumpers, suspension, axles, frames, sheet metal, etc with it. never had any issues with the welder, or any welds fail.

It only has two heat settings and runs only flux core wire. At a max of 80 amps you will be limited on how thick of metal you can weld......sheet metal to 1/8". I found it at Home Depot for around $250. You will quickly out grow it.

If this is still your budget then I'd go pick up a Hobart 140 from TSC for $499. http://www.tractorsupply.com/mig-wel...welder-3812040 You can run the flux core wire while you save up some money for the tank of shielding gas.
