Default Vibration

So I'm having some serious vibration when I put my XJ in gear. When it's in park and at idle it's fine, but as soon as I put it in gear and stop at a light it feels like the Jeep is going to fall apart from vibration. I also have a rough shift from reverse to drive, that's the only time it's a rough shift. It sounds like a thud. This has got me thinking I need a new tranmission mount. I can't figure out how to upload pictures, but I looked at the mount and it doesn't look too bad, except one side does look a little worn. I tried moving the transmission around with my hands, but it wouldn't budge. I'd like some feed back to see if my huntch is right. If so, what transmission mounts do y'all recommend?

open your hood and put it in gear (drive)with the engine runing. give it a little gas and if the motor moves up and it vibrates then I would say it will be motor mounts. same when u put it in revers...mounts can look ok but they sag, tear, crack smoosh etc.I would just change them all if they are over a few years old..new mounts make a world of difference. 4.0s have a lot of torque, compounded by being in low range off road etc.they dont last long ...try it worth the time and $$ in my opinion

p.s...if your exhaust is ratteling under your feet then most likely the transmount.....i got all my mounts from autozone

Thanks, I'll give that a try. The transmission mount is cracked and a little torn, and I have looked at the engine mounts and they don't have any cracks or tears in them. I'm still going to try what you told me and see if thats it.

sounds like your transmount then....on your engine mounts look to see if the center hole where the bolt goes thru is in the center of the mount...a sagged mount may look ok but if it is not in the center then the cushoning effect is less thus vibes...like I said I would just go ahead and change them all...the trans mount will be the hardest and it isnt all that bad...good floor jack and maybe a buddy to help (not needed but makes it a little faster) line up the skid plate/x member...1/2 hour tops...same with the motor mounts 1/2 each. Good luck

So I just checked and the engine doesn't jerk forward or anything. I did the exact same thing while looking at the transmission and it twisted a bit. Enough to where I noticed the left side go up and the right side go down. It made the transfer case twist the same way too.

if your gonna buy just a stock mount which is all you need, whatever Napa or Autozone sells off the shelf..they are all the same for the most part and they all fail in time anyway...there are bompproof ones out there but stock is fine for a transmount....motor mounts I went with stock as I am an old man and drive easy but Brown Dogs and a couple of others out there are great if yer young and hit the pedal hard all the time ...i will let the users of those mounts give there opinion as I have never used them

Thanks CK1, I'll just go to Autozone since I buy all my stuff there. Motorcharge, that may be true, but since my wife never rides in the Jeep with me I can do without all the vibration lol.

Hey CK1, when changing my transmission mount where should I put the jack? Should I put it on the transmission or on the transfer case?
