Default Transfer case question

The 4wd shifter in my XJ ("98) has 2wd,4part time,4 full time, n and 4 lo. It goes 4 wd drive no problem in 4 part time but does not seem to hook up in 4 full time. It actually just seems to go to neutral after leaving 4 part time. I don't know the history on the transfer case, it could've been changed at some point. Just wondering if I'm missing something in the way I'm shifting. I hope I made sense in my description. Thanks

There should be a circle tag (label) on the transfer case. Google np231 tag location. Might have to clean it up when you get down there

The shifter combination you mention is for the 242 Transfer Case. Could be that someone swapped it out for the 231.
As previous poster suggests, check the circle tag to verify which TC it is and get back to us.

I'll be darned, just crawled under and its a np231. That explains why I couldn't get her in 4 full time.

I got a 96 country and the PO of mine did the same (swapped 242 for 231). I did some research and think the np231 has a more comprehensive aftermarket.

The confusing part is the shifter bezel has the diagram for the 242. That's why I thought it was the 242. The build date on the stamp is 9/97 which probably means my '98 came with this tc. I'll grab the proper bezel at a salvage yard just for consistency.
