Default Transfer case prices

I'm looking at a 1999 XJ for $1650.00. ad says it has 201k miles and needs the transfer case replaced. Looking around on CL to check out tcase prices, but wasn't much listed. If looking used or rebuilt what would be a reasonable price for one? My current budget is $2k (total for a vehicle), so not sure if this a good option or if I should just wait.

And (yes another newb question incomming) what transfer case does this model need?

It will most likely need an NP231. Could have an NP242.

I sell transfer cases locally for $200. (I part out XJs) You can get them for far less than that in a pull-a-part type junk yard.

Cool, so shouldn't completely kill the budget. Thank you for the response.

I got mine from a "friend" who owns a local wrecking yard for $250. Looks like I need to find new friends.

Ha.

I'm sure prices vary across the country. T-cases from salvage yards are typically way higher. I'm sure he cut you a good deal on their normal price.

Just depends on the yard.

Self service yards are cheap.

Mom and Pops full service yards are high.

I sell them for somewhere in the middle.

Does Canada not have aftermarket fabrication places?

That is true. Everything is more expensive in California...

The clean way to tell: If it has a position on the transfer case shift lever for Full Time 4WD, it's an NP242. If it doesn't have FT 4WD, it's an NP231.

Another clean way to tell: Get the VIN, click the link below and enter the VIN there to get the build sheet from Chrysler. That build sheet will tell you everything that was installed on it when it left the factory, including what rear axle you have, whether it had ABS, what options were included, etc.

https://jeep.custhelp.com/app/jeep/e...etail/session/

The dirty way to tell: Crawl under it and look for the round tag stamped with the model number on it.

Thanks for all of the responses on this. Darn thing sold before I woke up this morning. My luck, haha. a nice '99, even with the tcase issue, at that price goes quick.
