transfer case ?
I am replacing my tc. I think I found one at the jy. my question is how do i count the spline. the one at the jy has 26 counting the ridges. I have a 1990 with manny trans. I think it would be a 23 spline according to the research i have done. so is there such thing as a 26 spline? or did I count it wrong. It is a np 231
the one at the jy says 231c on the tag and like I said i counted 26 ridges. thanks for any help.

I believe you counted wrong. There were only 21 or 23 spline np231 transfer cases in the cherokees, now I could be wrong on the years but I believe 91 and up is 23 spline and 90 and older was a 21 spline. Also you are going to want to find a 87-90 t case anyways because of the vacuum disconnect system.

Sounds like you counted the splines for the drive shaft, you need to count the ones on the input where it mounts to the tranny.

They did use them on the s10s and the s10blazers, and yes the c means chevy and the j means jeep. So I take it you were looking at a transfercase that has already been removed?

yes it is already removed. but I have been searching even more and I am pretty sure I have a 23spline ax-15. just don't know the length of the input shaft. I guess I will keep searching for another tc. and to be safe I will find another 1990 xj with the manny trans and i6. this will be a pain in the **** I'm sure.
but any advice you guys have is very much appreciated.

Oh you have manual, well I'm not sure you could be right and have a 23 spline, I think for autos of that year it would be a 21 spine, but yeah I would stick to the 87-90 year range, you should be fine. Good luck.
