Tailgate shocks suck. What to do??
The tailgate shocks are not working on my 2000 XJ sport. Liftgate keeps coming down and hitting my wife in the head. Shocks worn out?? Need grease?? New air cylinders?? What does the hive recommend??

I'm cheap. I got a pair off a Explorer in the j/y for a buck. Don't lift as high as stock but don't ever wear out. Next time your at the j/y check all the Explorers, their hatches still work fine.

most of the ones--in fact all the ones I've seen at junkyards are already busted...but as someone said, they are cheap on Amazon. I can't say for XJs, but I know on some ZJs (like my 93) there are little metal tabs at the top that are mirror image--so you need a left and right--something that the auto parts chains don't seem to know, so the struts I bought from them were useless--
This is the one I bought---For ZJ---- lucked out, they had a 2 for 1 sale at the same time I happened to look.
I've had them over a year, and they have worked just fine. Came with a different type of metal clip, but that doesn't seem to matter so far.
Only issue I had changing them was that they had stupid female torx bolts, which meant I also had to find a MALE torx socket set and around here, Home Depot, Sears, Lowes...no one had it until I went to Harbor Freight--$12 or something there.
Chrysler has the annoying habit of changing fasteners from year to year...so make sure to have a look at what you need before getting started.

I had that problem on my '01. Only one was bad (I noticed the oil coming out of it), so I went to Autozone and bought a new one for $20. I had my wife hold the lift gate up while I replaced it. It only took 5 minutes, and it's been working ever since.

They are not $10 on Amazon.
Here is what you need. $30 for a pair is the best price I found.
I just installed these. Easy to replace.

Have her hold the liftgate 1/2 open, parallel to the ground for easiest access to the bolts.
