I agree for the most part, however, I usually torque anything used on the engine, suspension, driveline and lugnuts. Most everything else is overkill.

That's what I wound up doing. Thanks.

Ya, I spent 13 years as an aircraft mechanic in the military, and 4 as a civilian private Cessna mechanic, and my Harley has a torque val for everything. I think I'm just brainwashed to believe that absolutely everything requires a proper torque...I think elbow tight is pretty good for most things not involving moving components and frame parts...but like OCD, if I don't torque something, it keeps popping back into my head...lol.

Replaced mine with some I found at autozone. It's probably been 5 years and still work great. Not bad for $30.

[QUOTE=Tsaani97xj;2808322]Or if you are broke you can do this.

Metal is better but I only had plastic. Falls into place when you open it then just slide it over when ready to shut.[/QUOT

Great Job at Redneck Engineering! Works Damn Well Also.

DO NOT DO THAT! I was doing that and the Damon things let go causing the tailgate to fall on my daughter. This ripped off her fingertip and resulted in 20 - 30 thousand poo plates in medical bills. Please by all means spend the $40 and replace them. Everyday I wish I would have done that first.

One time I slammed my hand in a door and the whole damn thing fell off.

The hand, not the door.

This is a PSA: everybody get rid of all doors, they are a hazard to humanity and they can be very dangerous.

As far as using the vice grips, there's thrifty, then there's just downright dangerous.
Instead of trying to save a measly $30, just get the proper replacement struts.

Just saying, I used the vise grips for months. Not trying to be thrifty, I just needed the $30 for other, more important things... Treated them like they could fail at any moment and used a broom stick in case they did fail. I'm still here, no worse for it.. By the way, they didn't fail once.
