DO NOT DO THAT! I was doing that and the Damon things let go causing the tailgate to fall on my daughter. This ripped off her fingertip and resulted in 20 - 30 thousand poo plates in medical bills. Please by all means spend the $40 and replace them. Everyday I wish I would have done that first.

Just saying, I used the vise grips for months. Not trying to be thrifty, I just needed the $30 for other, more important things... Treated them like they could fail at any moment and used a broom stick in case they did fail. I'm still here, no worse for it.. By the way, they didn't fail once.
