First thing I replaced on my current XJ. Nothing pisses me off more than the gate suddenly coming down and smashing me in the head.

Bought some from oreilly Sachs brand they suck one popped off and broke the plastic window/gate interior piece . I lucked out found a totaled 01 2wd xj the struts are still good .
As for vice grips yes that works untill the rod gets jacked and them the fluid leaks out making a mess .

Here is what you need. $30 for a pair is the best price I found.
I just installed these. Easy to replace.

Have her hold the liftgate 1/2 open, parallel to the ground for easiest access to the bolts.
There is a 2 pack on amazon for 25 bucks...maybe not 10 a piece..but it's not much more..cheaper than your link

I know this is thread is a few months old but my new lift gate struts (Monroe Max Lift) came with new mounting brackets. Anyone know the torque value for the mount bolts? I've been googling this and searching the forum with no answers. Any help or links to other threads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Torque value for the lift gate struts is absolutely unnecessary. Just tighten them until they're tight....

Yeah you don't need to torque them perfectly. It's not a suspension part. Just don't overtighten them and you're fine with "snug".

Or if you are broke you can do this.

Metal is better but I only had plastic. Falls into place when you open it then just slide it over when ready to shut.

this might sound bad.. but in my years as a mechanic, the only bolts I remember torquing are...

1. Anything to do with a bearing
2. Head bolts

I might be forgetting something.. but I know my torque wrench has dust on it LOL

Great idea, imma do that even though my struts are fairly new, should make them last longer.
