Why don't Baja racers run rocklights? When they are flying through the desert what good is light under the rig going to do? They need GOOD light in front of the vehicle to see where they are going. When they are going that fast they need good light, because they can out drive the lights if they are crappy. And no I don't mean they drive faster than light (before you post another smart aleck response). If they do not have enough light out front then when an object appears in their field of view/light they won't have enough time to response if needed.

Not everyone is a Baja racer... that's fine. As I said I use my forward facing lights nightly on my drive home to keep an eye out for deer and other animals who decide it would be a good idea to walk in front of my Jeep. What good would rock lights do me? Except to spot what I have already run over.

I would rather see what I am coming up to than what I am already on/into.

Besides slow technical trails where you have to see where you are placing your tires, what other off road scenarios would rocklights be needed?

I find more need in seeing what is in front of and around my vehicle than what is under it.
we're talking about cherokeeforum. there might be like 1 guy who actually pre runs here. and he's probably a lurker because I haven't seen him (we posted at the same time, but in my previous post I did say that go-fast at night would a reason for lights). running your aux lights on road is illegal as far as I've read. REMEMBER YOU HAVE HIGH BEAMS

lets face it. people buy off road lights because they're cool. I bet they're used more often to blind someone who cuts you off in traffic than they are actually needed off road

Very few trails are 1 continuous obstacle. The distance between obstacles and the terrain involved will dictate the type of lighting needed.
there we go

however, take the doors off and you and your passenger can spot through the thick of it

I prefer to night wheel with no lights at all.

It makes it a lot more interesting.

So take off the doors so you can have someone hang out to see where your wheels are in relation to an obstacle?

WGTBSM!?!?

So yeah.../argument is right.

i have 8 aux lights on my jeep. why? so i can see as if it was day time. not necessarily for wheeling but more for working on stuff at night.

i see aux lights as just part of an offroad vehicle. you always need to be prepared when wheelin, why not be prepared to provide extra light? ya never know.

I like to leave at least one of my lights pointed quite a bit above where the headlights are aimed. Helps a lot, IMHO, coming down steep hillswhere your headlights are aimed too low to really SEE the bottom. That light will show you what your headlights cant, the bottom of the hill. I'd consider that rather important....

This is where I wheel at night, I prefer my lights Illuminate everything so I can see Some of these areas are wide enough for one rig with 2 way traffic and with 100' + drop offs at the edge of the trail

I wheel on the beach quite a bit, 67 miles of remote beach to be exact. I run 4 aux KCs off my roof rack, 2 floods and two spots. I've seen a Tahoe on the beach that broke an axle in half by hitting driftwood at night. I decided I didn't want to do that 50 miles down the beach. More lights, see more obstructions. Was pretty simple choice for me.

I bought my Hellas because my lights are **** poor. The problem is that I upgraded them and now they are somewhat blinding on the road so I have to turn them off when cars come drive towards me. But for offroading I don't see why you wouldn't want as much light as possible

And Tom, I swear I hate you more and more everytime you post up those badass offroad shots from your area. Lucky bastard.

Agreed, but you asked for an off road situation where forward facing lights were needed. You didn't specify that everyone on CF only crawled and that the off road situation had to involve crawling.

I will agree that a lot of people do buy them for the look, they generally still have the covers on them. However, just because someone has them does not mean they don't use them. Just because they don't fit your need doesn't mean they don't fit someone's need.

I love having plenty of lighting in the woods at night!
