Default Stupid question

Those lights people get for their jeeps...the ones that say KC on them. What are they for? Are they street legal?

They're street legal AFAIK and they're for additional viewing light on trails.

they're for people who think they need hardcore offroad lights. absolute waste of money if you asked me. they're just for show and you can't light them up on the street. rocklights would be sweet though

should be street legal as long as you keep the cover on them.

Off road lights are great if you plan on night wheeling, but a waste of money if you never go off road or only wheel in the day light. Adding lights and stuff only to look cool is a waste and brings unwanted attention to your Jeep by theives.

Really?!?! There are multiple aux. lighting options for all sorts of applications and driving conditions. Fog lights? Driving lights?

For some folks adding bolt-on's of any type is a waste, others see it as a way of customizing for the look that they want. There's no right or wrong, there are only opinions.

For the OP...

KC is brand, KCHilites to be exact. They have been in the aux. light business for many, many years and are the Gold Standard that everyone else tries to copy.

actually yeah really. I wheel almost exclusively at night every weekend. I have never felt the need for more lighting on the front of my rig. rock lights are a different story. those would be the first aux lighting I would get. but big bright HID's or LED's pointed off the front of my rig? uselss to me. they'd just be for looks

Not everyone wheels on the same trails as you.

You may not need them, so that makes them a waste for everyone?

That's silly.

I run Hellas, Less expensive & come with everything you need. I drive with mine on all the time, NYS law allows for a maximum of 2 sets of lights on at any time.
I like having aux. lights, I usually find myself leaving the trails late & lights work for me. Can't beat having all sorts of lights when a friend brakes down & the sun is going down....

dark is the same as dark. how does the terrain matter? you're silly
give me a situation where lights off the front of your rig would be necessary

High desert vs. a forest logging road.
Rock filled canyon vs. a mud bog
Dense fog vs. snow

Different needs, different lights.

Don't come wheeling in my neck of the woods. A few of our trails have hairpin turns and drop offs that will land you 50-500ft down the drop off. Seeing at night is a good thing here.

I have clear lenses on my hid for the trails in the less dusty months and when the ground is covered with snow. And yellow lenses for the dusty , foggy, and snowy conditions. I like to see where I am going at night.

and rock lights all around wouldn't take care of this becausee? I'd rather see underneath my tires and off to my sides than have 2 bright lights pointed straight up in the air in an off camber situation.

serious I'm still not seeing the usefulness. you're just comparing different terrains not saying why lights are needed. are you smashing through the desert at night? yeah that would be an acceptable reason for aux lights

crawling, I just dont see the need for FRONT mounted lights

I have a set on the front of my XJ and use them nightly. Living in the country I have to keep an eye open for deer crossing the road so they work well.

Why don't Baja racers run rocklights? When they are flying through the desert what good is light under the rig going to do? They need GOOD light in front of the vehicle to see where they are going. When they are going that fast they need good light, because they can out drive the lights if they are crappy. And no I don't mean they drive faster than light (before you post another smart aleck response). If they do not have enough light out front then when an object appears in their field of view/light they won't have enough time to response if needed.

Not everyone is a Baja racer... that's fine. As I said I use my forward facing lights nightly on my drive home to keep an eye out for deer and other animals who decide it would be a good idea to walk in front of my Jeep. What good would rock lights do me? Except to spot what I have already run over.

I would rather see what I am coming up to than what I am already on/into.

Besides slow technical trails where you have to see where you are placing your tires, what other off road scenarios would rocklights be needed?

I find more need in seeing what is in front of and around my vehicle than what is under it.

Rocklights benefit the spotter, not the driver.

Very few trails are 1 continuous obstacle. The distance between obstacles and the terrain involved will dictate the type of lighting needed.
