I've been very impressed with my stock xj's off road abilities with the 235 m/t's. Granted I don't do any hardcore wheeling but it's gotten me down/up some pretty sketchy trails.
Mine is still stock cause I feel like I have more to learn about it off-road before I do any mods on it. You can go more places than you would think.

I have had a few XJs. I currently have my big one (stroker/6.5"/35s) and a stock one. I am thinking to do a good quality baby lift kit on the stock one... like an OME2" or so. I just hate being so low after driving my big one around for 8 years. That and the stock suspension is shot.
You can get through anything you could get through with a stock truck/any other SUV. The XJs weight probably makes it a little better in mud/snow/sand than most other factory 4x4s.
Once you get more and more modified, they become less and less comfortable to ride on the street.

I plan to stay stock for some time. Maybe some AT in 225/70 16. I really dont do any serious qheeling, its mostly situational. Camping, hunting, fishing etc.

A stock XJ with good tires is still very capable, especially for non-clearance terrain like snow, mud, loose dirt/gravel. For clearance stuff like ruts and large rocks, 50% of that is driver skill (picking the correct lines) and not rushing things.

I stopped hacking up XJs years ago. They're capable of far more than people give them credit for. Now days my mods are limited to traction (lockers) and skids/rails. A single locker will exponentially increase any Jeep's off road capability even a stock one.
