ok so my xj has been smoking severely and i checked my oil before and after coming home from work and it went down like a half an inch or so. it was only a 15 mile drive... Just give me some opinions on what the **** i should do. its not leaking, its burning. I am pretty sure whatever i do im keeping the jeep. even if it means new motor/hell of a lot of work on my current motor. But the thing is.. i barely have enough money to keep gas in it and insurance. I just dont really know what to do.

When does it smoke? On startup or constantly? If its on startup, you have leaking valve stem seals in the head. If it does it constantly, your rings are bad. How many miles on it? With money being an issue, anything anyone tells you is going to cost some coin. Be it a head rebuild or a motor rebuild/ replacement.

just a quick update. i changed my oil the other day. when i filled it i waited for it all to settle to the bottom before checking. i checked it and it was just barely below the highest "safe" line. in approximately 2 days and 200mi it went down all the way to just below the bottom safe line (so its in the add area but just barely) now after about 50mi i checked again and oils in the same spot. still smoking but it hasnt moved again since it dropped drastically. does that mean maybe my girl just wanted to get to an oil level she was happy with? idk

so its been about a week.. ever since my oil made that drastic drop it has stuck exactly at the same level. even after towing and about 200mi of regular driving.. wtf. but also my beautiful clean oil already looks dirty. not milky like it has coolant, just dirty. should i change it sooner than 3k?
