Default Seeking pre-purchase advice

I've been shopping for a 97-01 Cherokee for several weeks now (NW Ohio area). I literally can't get to lots before they're snatched up so I've taken to cruising CL and other sites. I've done a fair amount of research to get familiar with the issues and probs for these years, but I wanted to reach out for any advice that anyone is willing to offer. I want this to be my "forever ride," and I'm committed to putting the necessary $ in for years to come. But, I want to start with a decent one. What should I be looking for and asking about? Also, if I find a great body with high miles (ergo, lower $), should I commit to something like that but plan to replace engine, etc? Totally appreciate any thoughts . . .

First things first, condition of the body is everything. Then look for drivetrain problems (engine/tranny/axle problems). Then be nit-picky with everything and anything to knock down the price - look for common problems like oil leaks, saggy headliner, etc. etc. Anything to knock down the price.

If it's clean plan on spending 5k on up regardless of mileage, supply & demand.

Id avoid a 00-01 because they have a newer head that is known for cracking, they have an updated emissions thing with three cats, and a low pinion front axle. I spent 4500 on mine with 130k and was very clean, and I feel like I paid to much. Look for options that you can't change such as 2 door or 4 door, or 5 speed or auto. My advice is buy the cleanest, cheapest, bone stock rig you can find.

Give it a thorough exam for rust underneath!

Thanks so much, I'm trying not to overthink this purchase True - I have not seen much under 5K worth committing to, which is fine so long as I don't buy into big problems on account of my ignorance. I appreciate the specifics you all advised.

Aside from obvious/active leaks and/or scary noises, are there any visual cues that I might look for under the hood that indicate problems? (sorry - chick here - I'm trying! haha) I've looked at tons of pics of motors and have done a fair amount of reading to learn a little (not afraid to get dirty, crawl around, or ask dumb questions - just need to know what I'm looking at).
Thanks again!
