I'm wanting to do a full length roof rack for the girls Jeep but I want the ends to open. Just some 4-6" sides. Been looking at a ton of roof rack threads, but nothing really stands out as something I would try and mimic in a longer tray.
Anyone have any advice or ideas as to construction, materials or mounting? I want to be able to carry long boards on the top as well as a spare, jack, etc. for wheeling adventures.
How many mounting points should a rack this size use. Any Midwest fabricators interested in helping?

Where did you get yours? Or is it home made and for sale?
Looks nice. I like the length overall across the top. And yeah, I could see modding it to be open at the front & back.
Could even be hinged. from the looks of it, it would suit my wants for the girls rig.

I built onto the stock crossover bars. Added a few extra. They dont rust.
Pulled all the screws on the rails and installed expansion anchors to insure there would be no pull out.
Drilled and bolted thru the stock crossovers.
Work with stainless daily and used some of the forming dies at work.
Stainless construction and fasteners.
It's solid and secure.
Saved my old Silverstars, the Hi beams still function, powered thru dual feeds and relays. If doin over today would light with led.

I've got 4 gutter mount brackets I just took off my buggy build I won't be using if you're interested? All you would have to do is fab the cross bar for them and go from there.
On that note though have you thought on how to mount it? Some say the gutter mounts are bad others say the factory rails are bad. I've had both and by far prefer the gutter.
I had a Kargo Master basket that had a spare, two 5gal Jerry Cans(full), a shovel, and my heavy *** up there and never felt unsafe. Couldn't say the same for the one I had using the factory rails.
