Some people will argue ERW to save money, but for the time and effort put into a cage spend an extra couple bucks a foot and build one that will stand up significantly better on impact.
Run through the floors and weld to the frame. Never understood why anyone took the time to build a cage then weld it to the thin *** sheet metal on the floors like a lot of people do.
