Most jammers are an empty box with a power cord running into it and work accordingly.
Instant on will get you if you are the only one on the road but a good detector will pick up on anyone in front of you getting hit for a few miles. Unless ... there is a lot of curves and hills.

Not in all states...http://www.1stradardetectors.com/rad...ector-laws.php
Radar jammer use is a felony. You could pay as much as $11,000 for each violation and/or you could be sent to jail.
Because these jammers are for laser and not radar, US federal laws prohibiting the use of radar jammers do not apply to these devices. However, several states have one or more laws that specifically prohibit the use of laser jammers, including: California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Oklahoma, So. Carolina, Tenessee, and Alaska. New York and Texas are currently trying to introduce legislation banning the use of laser jammers

I'm running a Whistler 1748 Radar/Laser Detector. I found it in my garage when I was cleaning it out one day
It's pretty impressive for being a fairly old detector. I can pick up signals from almost a mile away. The thing talks too. It has a woman's voice that tells you what band of radar it's picking up
It also has a compass, radar filter, 360 degree radar pickup, and a Safety Warning System that picks up radar signals from ambulances and fire trucks to help you avoid a car accident and potential traffic jam.
It's definitely more than just a radar detector in my opinion. It's a shame that they were discontinued and replaced with the Whistler XTR series even though they're pretty much the same thing.

One of my hobbies is "RDology". I have been studying radar detection for about 5 years now.
I'll make this post short but informative for anybody looking to buy a detector and what you need to understand. I won't go into specifics, but I'll put the facts out there for you.
First of all, the worst radar detectors are Cobra and Rocky Mountain Radar. Avoid these at all costs. They suck. Cobra is BLIND to certain KA band frequencies (thinner beams), such as 34.7, 33.8, and will not detect the police at all. It also has many more issues. Like I said, avoid these detectors. They have horrible performance. Also, there's no such thing as 6 bands, 8 bands, 12 bands, 15 bands, etc. That means nothing. There's X Band, K, Band, KA Band and Laser. (I'll discuss Laser momentarily.)
Yes, radar jammers are a felony. Don't use them. Besides, using one can actually increase your speed on the cop's radar gun by hundreds of miles per hour. Not cool. As far as POP mode, it should be disabled on detectors and is rendered as almost useless. If a cop clocks your speed with a POP measuring device, he cannot issue a ticket. What he can do is POP you, then take out his X/K/Ka Band radar gun and get your speed that way. But don't worry, there's protection against this; also referred to as "Instant-On/IO radar". POP mode limits other internal scanning capabilities on most detectors and should be disabled. Doing so will actually increase performance on your radar detector in most cases.
Whistlers are good budget detectors, and the new SE series are just as good as the high-end and more expensive professional models. So if you're on a tight budget and don't have much money to spend, get a Whistler XTR-695 SE or Pro 78 SE. These are incredible for what you pay and you'll get the most out of every dollar. Another poster mentioned the Escort 8500 as being a good detector. Well it is still good but it's becoming obsolete.
If money isn't an issue and you want top performance, I'd recommend the Redline detector by Escort or the V1 by Valentine One. These are considered to be two of the most powerful and top performing detectors available on the market. If you do most of your driving in a big city, then I'd recommend an Escort 9800ix, as it uses GPS technology to prevent false alerts. All 3 of these are the best.
And radar detectors are not enough anymore. While they're still necessary, you'll also need to invest in a laser jammer. Most states (corporations) allow the use of laser jammers. A few select states will issue misdemeanors and citations for using them and may physically cut off/disconnect the detectors on the spot. You can find an online list of where they may be legally used.
If you have money to spend, get the best. Get Laser Interceptor. If you're on a budget, get Blinder. Do not buy any other jammers. They are all mostly crap. Trust me. I've been actively studying this stuff for half a decade and have evaded many hundreds of speed traps across the country.
I hope this helps, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Yes. Just don't buy the older models, like XTR-330, etc. You want at the very least get an XTR-695 or Pro 78. If you have the extra bucks, get the 695SE or 78SE. You'll notice an increase in performance by several hundreds of feet. Do not buy anything below these models. They are mostly all obsolete.

You, just like myself, also live in New Jersey. Most of the traffic cops out here use X band. NJ is one of the only states still using this old band. But recently, New Jersey police are upgrading to Ka band radar guns. Yes, cobra can detect Ka band, however, like I said, it is blind to the popular frequencies being used today, and does a poor job of advance notice. The only thing Cobra is decent at picking up is X. Simply put, your cobra is going to fail in the near future. You'll need to get a better detector ASAP.
