But if your on a budget cobra is probably the way to go.
I guess you can call it a budget. Any chance you can answer my question about the instant on above??

Yes the detector will detect the beam hitting other cars, or you. You wont be able to tell which car it is hitting or anything but it should go off.

Personally, I use a cobra that my wife bought me for christmas one year about 5 years ago. I don't typically speed as I set the cruise at 3mph over, but when the cobra goes off it makes me check my speedo thus making me a safer driver. (I'm a dork, I know). I did get one ticket though, but it was because I was lasered at a speed limit drop point and if you get lasered it's too late and you're caught anyway.

Valetine 1 is like 399 if I'm not mistaken. And the 9500 isn't too far behind.

What cobra is it? And the whole making me check, that's the reason why I would like one

I'll have to check it shortly, but 5 years ago it was the $80 one from target.

Yes, they are. However, they're the best, and you get what you pay for. Personally, I won't buy a radar detector because I don't want to get used to depending on them. Instead of thinking "my radar detector isn't going off, so I'm free to speed" I'd rather just keep my eyes out, and be careful. Plus, they just don't work all that well. Especially with a lot of LEO's using pop radar & laser now.

High end detectors will detect pop and tell you where its coming from. Mind you thats great if theres cars in front of you, not great if its one in the morning and your the only one on the street.

That's what i meant. If you're the only one out, or if you're the first one in a group of cars and they're using pop radar, the detector is useless.

Most the time, since I'm w/o a detector, I travel in the middle of a high speed "pack"

I don't need a radar detector to remind me to check me speed. That seems lazy to me, esp since its a glance waY. Unless you drive somewhere else than right in front of your speedo?

Waste of money. Just like abs.

The highway patrol around me do not leave their radar on all of the time, they only turn it on when they suspect somebody is speeding. I had a detector, but got tired of all of the false alarms and still gitting tickets because of what I wrote above.

I use mine to alert me of potential problems. I don't drive like a madman, but just in case I try to pass somebody, ect

I also keep a sharp eye out for cops in their spots. I know around me they won't turn it on until your right in front of them when they're camping out so it's to late.
