Let me explain why this is, working at a parts store.

It is because of these idiots that call and say
Customer: "I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, I need a wire set"
Employee: "Does it have the 4 or 6 cylinder sir?"
Customer: "Neither, its a V8"
Employee: "OK sir, so you have a Grand Cherokee then?"
Customer: "Yeah, a Cherokee, thats what I said"

It is not because most employees don't know the difference, it is because we have to deal with the general public, who don't know their *** from a hole in the ground. It is a lot easier to ask if it is a Grand or not right from the start with these people, than it is to get halfway through something and have to start over when you wrongly assume the customer is correct.

So the next time a person asks you if it is a Grand or not, just feel good knowing you're not one of the idiots we deal with on a day to day basis, answer the question, and move on

Should we feel good about the fact that we are pre-judged to already be one of the idiots??

Nope, but like I said, it is a lot better to know in the first 10 seconds of a phone call what you're actually looking for parts for, rather than 5 minutes in, both for an employee, or the customer.

Personally, I probably have had about 50% of the people that call for Cherokee parts, actually mean Grand over the past 2 years. That experience has taught me to ask the question from the start. If I assume it is a Cherokee because they tell me it is, and I give them the "wrong part", then its my fault. It isn't really, but that's how people think. Not just auto parts stores, but retail in general.

I grump about that too but I totally understand the informed parts guy's perspective. I used to work in tech support. Always ask if it's plugged in, and if it's been turned off and on again.

So did you go in to work thinking you were playing one giant, real life, game of Clue? Thats what I do. Makes me feel better anyways. I can only assume a tech support job would be pretty similar.

And to stay one topic, I HATE that the alternator is on the bottom of the motor.

I confuse the people at the store cause they ask me what year and I say it depends cause I have a 94 grand cherokee engine 99 intake 93 xj chasis plus a mix match of years of parts.

them asking doesnt up set me so much. but last time I took my 92 BMW 525it into a autoparts store to look up parts I got told that there is no such car by the new guy and then the other guy there behind the counter put his hand on his head and shook it. thats when I said really? then whats that and pointed at my car throught the store window.

I assume all of you ranting about stupid auto store employees know everything about every car ever made.

Oh and since you probably had only one text book for each of your classes, you must have gotten all A's since you didn't have dozens of books with hundreds of different editions to know for the test

People with stock jeeps with bald tires tell me I need bigger tires, I think 4.5 with 31s is fine for a jeep that primarily drives on pavement.
