to be honest, I dont think they really do anything..... I came from a high performance mustang cobra backround , and I would love to see an XJ strapped to a dyno and a before and after with a slightly ported throttle body on there. I bet its suck a trivial gain for the 85 bucks people charge on here, the one gas fill up you could use the $85 on would be much more beneficial. Just sayin.

Unless you're porting the runners on the intake manifold as well, you're going to see very little gain, if any at all. Even if you did a full port/polish on the head, intake, TB, you'd still probably see a max of 10-15hp out of that. Not worth it.
As for the "trash your nice XJ" conversation from a couple of pages ago... I bought my 98 with less than 178k miles on it. Interior is clean as can be, exterior had a couple dings but overall was decent. The first thing I did was lift it, went wheeling, ripped off the front fender flares (have yet to cut the fenders, but I will eventually). Now less than a year later it has scratches all over it from going through trails with trees/brush, has a couple more dings in it, has a little boo-boo on the front facia where I ran into a tree, etc. I don't even care.... I bought the thing to get me around in snow, and I bought it cheap. $1600 for a clean Jeep is not a big deal to me to go play with and beat up. I'll do whatever I want to it, because it's my car I don't care about. As long as it runs and drives, that's good with me. Soon the fenders will have tube fenders/flares on them, rock sliders on the rockers, new bumpers, etc. I fully intent to continue running into trees, getting scratched, and denting panels. I don't plan to sell the thing, and even if I did I could get more out of it now than I put into it. Win Win.
I looked at plenty of beat to crap Jeeps that would have been fine trail rigs, but I wanted something I could drive around without feeling like I was a driving something an Obama supporter could afford. There were 200,000 something of these made per year for a lot of years, the supply will not be running out anytime soon.

Exalty my point about the throttle bodies.
And im one of the guys who bought a super nice xj and wheels it.
I bought my 88k mile 98 xj that was perfect for 5500. I took a dremel to the fenders, put big tires on it, took out the carpet (putting good carpet back in- sunk the dam thing) and i plain on keeping it maintained.
What i hate the most is all these guys on here who post about wanting to lift their xj and dont want to spend any money.
I HATE AAL. For christ sake people, build it right the first time. -somthing i wish i did. SHould have never bought the rustys shocks.

nobody likes spending more money than they have to and it's hard to understand which parts you need when you're first getting into it. you don't really know how hard you want to wheel it, long term budget, how long the parts will actually last, how to distinguish quality parts vs. crappy ones and why it's a good idea to spend extra money in certain areas. we all learn eventually
