Yes. It's a good idea to put an SYE in anything above 3-4 inches of lift.
Mine is a 1999 and I had the 6.5 inch Rough Country lift kit.
Unfortunately, I had the NP242 transfer case and finding an SYE was difficult. Most people just do the hack-n-tap on it. The NP231 transfer case, on the other hand, has many SYE kits. I bought the Tom Woods SYE kit. It did cost quite a lot more than I wanted to pay, but I have the piece of mind that I got it done right. The hack-n-tap works, but it's just sketchy.

you forgot to add the actual "poll" to this thread. lol
I don't know if I would've needed an SYE my RE 4.5" lift isn't even in yet. but I got one anyway so I could do it once and be done with it
1993 np231 auto trans
I needed a couple sockets, a GOOD pair of snap ring pliers, flathead screwdriver, RTV gasket maker, small hammer, and maybe a couple other simple tools
had to drop the xmember so I used a floor jack to support the transmission. oh and it was a JB conversions SYE
