Muffin, Magnagrip seems like a great deal, but it's a snow tire. I can't use a snow tire in the summer.
The XJ is for winter, but I will need to drive it 1-2x a week all year round so it doesn't rust solid and sink into the pavement!

I need to pull the trigger on new tires.
I don't want it to suck in the snow, b/c that's the whole reason I got it.

But, is it a bad idea to get snow tires for year round use?
Should I not get all season highway tires?
Should I get "all terrain AT" tires

It's a 2nd car / winter car. Commuter.
I plan to use the XJ several times a week during winter, and once a week during the rest of the year (to keep it from sitting)

After reading this whole thread and somewhat understanding what your needs are... This would be the tire that i would go for. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kumho-1809913/19474058
I know that it is a little bit more than your price range, but IMHO you really cant beat a Kumho tire esspecially for everyday use.

Those walmart are good. I run them on 2 trucks, was on 3 but I upgraded. Have a brand new set of them, as take offs. Defently a good budget stock tire. Good wear grip pretty well in everything

try Pep Boys too. They used to have a decent selection of mud tires. Also, used tire places. I get an almost new set of BF Goodrich Long Trails for $35 apiece.

Thanks. I can afford a good tire, but just only if it's really WORTH it. Considering I may have these new tires for the life of the Jeep, 5-7 years, etc. I will be putting 5k miles a year on this Jeep at best. So, I am willing to pay more IF there is a true quality difference. All highway tires are the same to me, so it comes down to snow performance. 4 Kumho's will cost me $460 vs. $328. Are the Kumho's worth the extra $132?

Thanks, but shipping used tires negates any savings to be had. I can't drive 10 hours to buy used tires, either. Penny wise, pound foolish.

Out of the sets I'm looking at out of your bunch there I'd pick the wrangler radials from Walmart, they're a pretty well rounded good tire, they were my second set I had on my xj, good in snow, and will suit your personal errand grocery getting needs just fine.

A good tire, and being 82$ each, you can't really go wrong, plus its cheap to get a replacement if needed.

I had mine on until I had gotten a hold of my 3rd set of tires (Kelly safari MSR) and I definatly preferred these in the snow over the MSR's and the uniriyal liberator A/T's I was rolling on when I bought it.

Also keep in mind if you want better performance in the winter you can have them professionally siped, which I would also reccommend from experience of having my set siped about 1/2 through the winter months due to having a buddy at a tire shop that hooked me up.

Bottom line highlights of the wrangler- Cheap, reliable, well rounded performing tire....regaurdless if its purchased at Walmart or not.

Edit: If you do decide to get into a bit of reasonable fun with them they will probably get you home as well lol.

+2 on the bfg a/t's I am I believe runnin a 235/75/15 or close to that, its about a 30 inch tire I believe. not far from stock just a bit bigger, your speedo will still be pretty close, no lift or rubbing and good price. great all year round and good lookin... check out discount tire online and see there prices on there tires, they will honor the price in the store when you go into them.
good luck
