I've got a set up you might want to look at.
I started with this from the PO. I knew I wanted to have access to the rear floor to sleep in if I had to, so this wasn't going to cut it, and he had nothing hooked up anyway.
I looked at Eric's XJ site which has a ton of info, BTW and that got me thinking on where I wanted mine.

I liked Eric's ideas, but decided to keep the passenger's side open in case I want a speaker enclosure there or use in for something else. So I started to look at the other side.
Some have placed the compressor under the hood and the tank under the vehicle, but I thought over time this would be hard to work on if it was covered in mud, etc.
So I decided to use the tire mount bracket and fab a tray up on the other side.
I put a guage in the console:

Started with this tray but someone pointed out that the drain in the tank should be at the lowest point, so I decided to fab a better tray for it.

I came up with this design and went to my cousins place because I knew he had a sheet metal brake. We bent up a piece of scrap he had and I cut, ground, etc and painted it up.

I bought a lot of fittings and push in connectors from Discount Hydraulics - on line. I cut the tire bracket and mounted some angle to it for the compressor mount.
I've modified it a few times. I have both locker solenoids, a front air line on the front bumper, console gage, and a chuck off of the manifold. The parts that came with the Jeep also included a Wilkerson filter/regulator.
I've since added a valve for the front air line. The hose gets hot under the vehicle and I've found that if it's under pressure (charged all the time) it will blow. So I installed a shut off and only flip it on if I need air up front.
I put a glycol filled gage out back so I had a couple of readings for redundancy.
Here's some finished pics. Well actually, I should get some updated ones. If you have any questions, suggestions, let me know. Have fun with it! I loved putting mine together over the winter, it was fun thinking about it and coming up with ideas and trying them out.
One thing I want to change is the hoses for the air chuck, etc. I want to get some of the lite weight hoses for a nail gun, they'd be easier to use, store, and are safer than the spiral ones I have.

No on the reinforcement. I figured it had to be stronger there because it was designed for the spare. I used 8 self drilling screws, but I decided to mark it out and drill pilot holes. There seems to be plenty of metal there to mount to.
