Default OK...down to these 3...please help to decide.

EDIT: I ran VIN's on these vehicles on AutoCheck and turns out one had 5 owners and the other 2 were lease/rental/fleet. I came across a 1-owner '99 Cerhokee Sport that I bought with 130K - owner had a 2" stack of shop records of everything that was ever done to the jeep since day one (oil changes every 2-3K; several radiator and tranny flushes; and replacement of a few parts like belts, pumps, etc.) - I couldn't think of better piece of mind - thanks for all the suggestions on what to look for - it made me very comfortable making the purchase.

I will be looking at the following - please advise. For those that missed my previous posts, I am looking for a vehicle that can tow a small open trailer with 2 motorcycles totaling about 1400 to 1600 lbs.

Which ever one has an 8.25.

If the jeep has abs it does not have an 8.25.

Lower miles appeal to me. Idk about where you live, but a tow hitch is $24.99 at pick a part, and they are bountiful, if one has 4:11s and a limited slip I would jump on that one.

OK, so I have researched and found out what an 8.25 is but can you explain the diferrence between that and the others - would it be a deal breaker to have the d35 for instance?

I've researched the limited slip but what is the 4:11 referring to and why is it important....also, would it be a deal breaker for you?

u want a Chrysler 8.25 bc its bigger & ALOT stronger then a Dana 35...and 4.11 is a the gear ratio but u really dont need that low of a gear if ur running stock sized tires. Now if u lift her up and put bigger tires on her then you'd what to put lower gears her...like 4.11 gears

Like they said, look for the better rearend and the better gear ratio. You want a 231 t-case, this can be identified on the tag on the back of the t-case if you crawl underneath it. Are they all autos? I've never towed with a Cherokee but I prefer towing with a stick. Towing really abuses an auto, especially some of these being rather high mileage. Biggest problem you should have with a stick is needing a clutch eventually. Not saying you would definitely have a problem with an auto, just something to think about if you don't mind driving a stick.

They all look clean. The last one looks like it has a small lift. I can also see hood pins on the last one though which tells me there's some kind of hackery going on and who knows what else there is.

Dont let the tow package be a deal breaker. Some cherokee with a hitch reciever are equipped with a class 2. You can pick up a new reciever and wiring for like $180. Nut strips from morris 4x4, and a trans cooler from anywhere. That bumps you up to about 5,000 towing capacity. Personally, i'd go with the classic, but im a little biased.

Remember parts are cheap, just find one mechanically sound with the drive train you want.

Without crawling under you can also tell a 242 and 231 apart by the t case shifter. The 231 has 2hi, n, 4hi and 4lo. While the 242 has 2hi, part time, full time, n, 4lo.

like clayton said, hackery. old rims and bald tires with hood pins and a budget boost lift and the small dent in the fender. hackery. looks like someone sold the wheels that were on there and just threw those old jeep wheels on there. probably from a yj.

i'd go with the red one.

thanks - Is there a way to identify which gear ratio the jeep has?

Thanks - i am looking to get an auto but will give thought to the manual. I have heard that a 242 TC isn't bad - would it be a deal breaker if it didn't have the 231-t? which one should I absolutely avoid?

No! The np242 is great, don't let these guys turn you off from it. the 242 has the exact same gearing as the 231, same 4hi( aka part time) and the same 4lo but the 242 also has the full time 4x4 which will allow you drive in 4wd on all road conditions, not just slippery and loose surfaces like the 231 forces you to do. Also the 242 is known to be more durable, rated at 1,600 ft/lbs of torque, and was used In military Humvees!
