The 4:11 is referring to the ring and pinion gears. If you plan on lifting it and running bigger tires, it would be a nice amenity not to have to do a gear swap. 4:11s will go with a 33" tire very nicely. If it was a Dana "turdyfive" (d35) It would be a deal breaker for me. It's just a flat out ****ty axle. It no good for anything over 30" tires. It will snap axle shaft like tooth picks and bend the housing in no time. The c8.25 is a nice axle. I think the years you're looking all have the 29 spline 8.25. It's good for up to 35s and has a lot of aftermarket support.

For me, it was difficult to let the D35 be a deal-breaker because 8.25's aren't exactly plentiful around here. I wound up getting one with a D35 and a rebuilt NP242. It has 190k on it, I'm running 29's, and wheel it pretty hard sometimes, and haven't had an issue with either t-case or axle. It's also worth noting that the 4.11'ed D35 in my father's TJ's been spinning 32's for 350k now. Overall, the 8.25 is a more desirable axle, but I wouldn't let it be a real deal breaker because if you plan on modding to the point where it's too weak then you shouldn't have too much of an issue swapping it out anyways. Also, in response to the contrasting post above, any Cherokee with ABS has a D35... even '97 and up.

I'd go with the '99 Classic. It doesn't have that many more miles than the '98, and also looks like it was better taken care.

As for the '98 for $5900, that is massively overpriced.

The 8.25 is probably one of the best oem axles you can get and you will never have to worry about axle problems down the road if you ever lift it or put bigger tires on.

I wouldn't worry about the gearing so much if the jeep is an auto it is going to have 3.55 or better gearing which is not bad for stock tires. IF you tow in an area with hills the deeper gear would be nice.

X2 I dont understand why so many people dislike the np242 i love mine i wheel my jeep and my tcase has held up great plus i love the full time 4 option for when it snows around here as for my opinion on the jeeps i like the 99 mainly because i think it looks niceer than the other 2
