Default Is this an OEM hitch?

This hitch came on my Cherokee, and while I've never used it for anything, I'm thinking of swapping it out for a 2" hitch, as this one isn't adjustable or anything. I don't anticipate on having to tow anything very large (maybe a small camper at the largest), but I have my doubts on the tow capacity of the hitch that's on there.

The part I don't like is that I can't put in an adjustable hitch to compensate for my lift, and that it just doesn't LOOK sturdy.

Thoughts?

Looks like a generic bumper mount hitch and I would not trust it for anything heavier than a bicycle lol. A quality hitch mounts to the frame rails and not the weak stock bumper.

Oh, it does attach directly to the frame. It also attaches to the underside of the bumper for, I'm assuming, slight support. The majority of the attachment is on the frame. Tomorrow I'll get some photos; it's too dark out tonight to do so.

I'd have to say thats more than likely an aftermarket hitch. On my 98, the factory hitch is a 2", frame mounted reciever type hitch with the wiring (7 round) attached via a bracket to the left of the reciever. The one in your picture looks like a U-haul or Drawtite class one hitch.

the tow package hitch is a 2" one that mounts to the frame only. it is very sturdy. i bought a reese from pep boys for 120 bucks and put it on. very nice, just like the factory one

it is a class one hitch the did a special on all the classes of hitches on powerblock, maybe you can look up the episode. It isn't too strong but it holds and pulls my lawnmower and trailer just fine.

the only problem with that is that you are lifting the entire rear from the center of the vehicle, if the suspension moves one way or the other the whole jeep is going to come crashing down. 1 wheel should be lifted at a time and the use of jack stands

Thanks for the input guys. I'll probably pull the thing off, clean it up, and paint it at some point and sell it on Craigslist; there's plenty of yuppies around here at Colby Sawyer College that will put it on their Cherokees to pull their bikes around or something.

My main concern with it was that I couldn't put in an adjustable ball mount to compensate for the lift.

buy the one from your local autoparts store that looks like the larger class one and uses the 2" slide in hitch.

I've used a Highlift to jack up the rearend then pushed it off the jack to get the diff. off a stump. This was on a friends 69 Landcruiser. The front was sitting in mud and he didn't have a locker. Worked great!!
