While you can get away with high range switches in some cases, it is always a good idea to come to a complete stop when switching the t-case lever.
Sometimes you may need to let it roll slightly to lock into gear from neutral.

Pulling it into 4LO (all the way back) while moving at all is very hazardous to your gears' health.

If you need to know when/where/why to use 4HI or 4LO, look into it or ask.

make sure your foot isnt on the gas when you put it in 4hi, i can switch mine at any speed as long as im not on the gas, 4lo is a different story, you gotta put it in neutral to get in to it

X 4 like the guys said you can pull the 4WD lever back to the first detent on the fly. That is 4HI. ALWAYS come to a complete stop before pulling the lever all the way back which is 4LO.

I have also seen linkage issues with xjs in the salt belt if the 4wd is not used. I had a 97 XJ that I bought from some elderly folks that probably never even touched the 4 wheel drive lever. It was extremely hard to engage.

x2

BUT...
Come to a COMPLETE STOP, then put trans in neutral, then T-case 4Lo.

And when coming OUT of 4Lo, STOP, trans neutral, then shift T-case out of 4Lo

And NEVER EVER think youre Jeep is invincible in 4WD!!!

...cause thats a guaranteed "stuck" right there, lol.
...dont ask how I know ...back when I had open diffs...

NEVER go wheeling alone but if you do...be prepared for the consequences.

And dont forget to
have fun! Obviously.

x2. i can put it in high gears at any speed. one time i put it in 4hi full time while going about 65mph. don't do that.
the factory recommended tc high gear change is under 45mph.
