OP.
in order for the instrument cluster to work, you either have to swap the dash, or splice into your 96 dash, but before you do that you have to compare the resistances and voltages on all of the connections to make sure that the readers will display correctly. you will need the new harness because you're putting in a different motor... if you had a 4.0 in your '96, i would have said just use the tranny, transfer case, front axle and the driveshafts. either way, you will need to swap in the center console to have a 4x4 shifter.
Thanks for the info! To be quite honest, all that work sounds kind of overwhelming because i dont know how to splice wires and all that . Is the swapping in the 4.0 worth the hassel?? Are there any engine mods that could get me more out of the 4cyl? Yea I really wish I had the 6cyl it would make the swap to 4x4 hella easier! So to convert this 2.5l XJ to 4x4, Which tc will mate with the ax5? (i think thats my tranny) Would I need parts(TC/tranny/shift linkage) from a 4cyl Wrangler?

Unfortunately I wouldnt have any other form of transportation. Seems like alot of work and I dont want to have 2 non running vehicles. Having a shop do the engine and tranny swap would be nice and then I could handle the 4x4 conversion .

requirements for this task are a lot of electrical knowledge and affording downtime. if you have neither, then this task is most definitely not for you... if you have a cherry picker, pull out the motor, tranny and the axles and sell them on craigslist... because, a wrecked xj is barely worth 600 bucks, but you can definitely get that much for a low mileage motor and tranny alone... you wanna make some money? strip out the glass, cruise control, instrument cluster, center console, shifters, computer, overhead console, transfer case, HP D30, D35 shafts, or a complete C8.25, rear hatch, rear bumper, ac buttons, compressor, blower motor, steering column with tilt, window motors, door locks... and after all of this, you still get about $150 for body in scrap...

You're absolutly right, it's a disaster waiting to happen lmao. Yea grabbing it and parting it out sounds so much better! Im going to take your advice a steer clear of doing the swap. Thanks bro

i can't think of a shop that will step near a wrecked vehicle swap for less than $1500. because you never know what you're getting into without taking everything off, reassembling it and hitting the GO switch.

True that. If I wanted to convert to 4x4, would I have to get parts from a 2.5 yj/tj or xj? Would i use the same 231 tc as them since they came with ax5 also?
