Personally, I HATE ZJ's. My buddy had one and I felt embarrassed riding in it. I think the XJ is perfect because there are so many aftermarket parts available on the cheap, and the XJ is SUPER easy to work on.
Also, regarding the V8: So!? Jeeps are known for the 4.0 and thats a big reason many of us buy them. There are LOTS of V8 vehicles out there and if you really wanted, you could put on in your XJ.
Its all personal opinion, but when it comes right down to it, it seems like there are a lot of little issues with the ZJ. Might not mean anything more than that, or it might mean there are more problems then you realize.
I dont see the advantage personally. And the ZJ is HIDEOUS!

Yeah Its the same here but it took some persusion to get me out of it. Glad I posted this or I might be driving that ZJ with a ton of problems instead of this 2-Door.
If I could put a 360 or a 318 in for cheap and know I could get it done quickly without to many problems then I'd do it. Just not now, now I'm broke lol I personally like the look of the ZJ. I know they are more problem prone but I do think personally they can be just as capable if you build them right. But I'm extremely happy with my new Jeep so I can't complain lol
