Default Need help BAD

This will be a long one.
On my way to work this morning I had snow and ice on the ground and had to use 4wd. I took the jeep out of 4wd and drove for about 20 minutes without it I stopped at a stop light and when I went to turn I slipped a little because of ice but gained traction.
When I went to make another turn and accelerate I noticed that the car made a bad grinding noise and could not accelerate very well. I also smelled a bad burning smell. I got to work put the car in neutral and revved up the motor and was fine. Put the car in reverse, sound and smell came back.

Does anybody have advice.

Do you have a full time 4wd option on the shifter?

I do not have a full time 4wd option. Only part time and 4wd hi. It is a 96. Tranny fluid good engine oil good, not sure about t-case or diff fluid. I did have to use the 4wd over the weekend on the highway for about 4 1/2 hours. I also had to put it in at a high speed to save myself from an accident over the weekend while it was off.

Was any of that driving on pavement, not covered in snow?
What happens if you put it in 4wd now?

About 50 mph. Some was done on pavement. Majority on snow. 4wd still goes in. Had to leave the jeep and go to work so did not get alot of play time to see what it would and wouldn't do

You should not use 4wd on pavement it can tear up your drivetrain. To me it sounds like your transfer case is messed up. When you get back to it, we if it goes into, 4wd also check fluids.
