so im looking at this 1995 grand cherokee, its got 160k, and automatic. im going to be using this for a winter beater in the snow.

what are some common problems to look out for, or anything for that matter?

go with the 4.0 w/aw4 transmission, indestructable combination. the trans used on the v8 model is a week link

Kinda wierd... Ive heard that a lot, but Im wondering how that can be... Im looking to replace my wife's 94 because, at 292k the only thing we arent having trouble with is the transmission.

Sorry to hijack a little, but Id like to widen the question and ask it again. Im looking at buying a later model grand cherokee, say 99~05 as i know the earlier ones pretty well. What are the ins and outs of the WJ, features to look for, features to stay far away from, issues, engine types... I've never looked at anything newer than the 01 xj, and thats not necessarily typical.

The other option is a wrangler, but as this is a cherokee forum I staying out of that.

What we are looking for is a proven vehicle you can have a little fun with, can handle high usage, and will be safe for my wife and son. We are looking to stay under 9k, and get decent gas milage (as in 18-22+, I know jeeps arent hybrids or anything, just not 10-12).

She hates to see her 94 die, but at 292k with poor maintenance, its been run ragged and i dont think it will make it til summer. She put half that on in the last five years.
