Default Luggage Rack Problem

I have a '96 Cherokee XJ and the buttons on the luggage racks are stuck. I forced one of the buttons and it came off and broke off 2 little tabs on the button. How can I get the buttons to work again? I need to move the racks apart to install kayak racks.
Thanks!

PJ Blaster allow it to soak a few hours between apps, gentle taps w/ hammer helps work it in, repeat for a couple of days---DONE--- The entire world can be dissembled w/ proper application of PJ Blaster or C4 your choice

I had the same issue, so I took a large flat head screw driver and put the handle on the button and gave the flat head a good whack or two and it popped loose (had to do it to all 4).

I'll try the PB Blaster. I tried WD-40 and it was useless. Thanks for the reply.

Once the button has broken and been removed, you will see a metal rod inside the rack that is spring loaded. Use a screwdriver or needle pliers to lift up on rod, slide rail into new position while holding rod up.
