Long time Jeep owner, first time poster here....

I recently bought a new 2015 Cherokee Sport, have about 5K miles on it, and recently I have been hearing a loud "clank" type sound when I fully release the brake pedal. It sounds like metal on metal. It does not affect brake performance (car stops fine) but is extremely loud and I can feel the clank in the shifter and in the space underneath the shifting column.

Does anyone else have ideas on if this is normal or if I should bring it back to the dealership for a look? Clearly under warranty, just wondering what I should tell them.

Do you have to be moving for this noise to happen or can you be sitting in park and simply step on the brake to hear this noise?

I am pretty sure if I took my XJ to a dealer they would laugh and tell me to get the "new and improved cherokee", after giving me a $3000 estimate for new diff's

OP - my clunk actually ended up being a track-bar bushing and sway-bar bushings (they were clunking when the suspension would "pull up" during slow breaking.

Additionally, my parking brake adjustment star was out of alignment and causing my brakes to clunk when it was wet out. Suggestion is to;

1. Narrow down the clunk
2. Start replacing worn out parts in general (brakes are pretty important to not dying, so if the rear brakes are shot - a rebuild would be in order).

Can you shift out of "Park" without stepping on the brake pedal?

 

Answering a few questions asked:
1. I do not have to be moving to get the clank. I have been able (sometimes to replicate it sitting in a driveway or parking spot)
2. I do not know if I can shift out of park without depressing the brake. Is this something I should test?

My only issue with scheduling an appointment at the dealer is that sometimes it goes away! It will happen for a few days, then be back to normal again. Hard to explain, but it almost feels like there is no cushion of air that I usually feel when I depress the brake when it is working normally. Really easy to depress the brake when the clank is present.

Sounds like it has something to do with the brake booster based off of your "cushion" reference. To dig a little further, does it still do this when the engine is not running? Press the pedal a few times. You should notice your "cushion" deplenish and the pedal start having less travel as well as an increase in resistance. Do this to see if you can replicate the sound. The goal here to to find a consistent way to replicate the problem. Intermittent problems are tough but if it's common, most dealerships have probably seen it already and have a fix.
