We are getting a 1991 jeep cherokee for my son's first car. I've never been around jeeps or know anything about them. It has the inline 6 4.0 liter. Is there anything to check or watch that Is known for going bad? It has roughly 200,000 miles on, not exact because the spedometer quit for about a year. It's going to be a daily driver but only in town with speed limits 30 or below. Just want to make sure it's safe and dependable. Thanks

Welcome! I'm in high school, so around your sons age. I daily my XJ. The 4.0 is one of, if not the best engine ever made. Just saw one for sale that hat 700k miles on it. Check over the cooling system. Make sure the coolant isn't brown. And look for rust. It'll be a very dependable car if taken care of. Let me know if you have more questions

Thanks, when we get it I plan on checking everything real good. There is some surface rust starting to show but nothing bad, it's been sitting a couple years so hopefully all is good. First thing I checked was the oil dipstick making sure there wasn't any antifreeze on it and it's looking good. We plan on learning and having a lot of fun with this jeep.

Look for rust in the rocker panels and floor pans,Besides that test drive it and test out the 4 wheel drive on it.

This. First cherokee I bought I didn't know much about the issues they have with rust and where. It ended up being the front leaf spring hanger wasn't attached to the uniframe as well as the uniframe essentially splitting in one spot. If you live in more northern states (like me) this is always a big issue.
