Default Looking for info on tire chains and cables

A guy I know has a set of chains and cables (2 chains, 2 cables) and is willing to sell them for $25 for each pair. My XJ is 2wd running 31" tires. They will fit, but i've never run either so i'm just looking for information.

I go snowboarding fairly often, and with snow coming any day, and a 12% grade hill to climb, i was worried about sliding on snow and slush.

Now, would I be fine with just one set and not the other? What are the positives of each, what are the negatives of each, what are the negatives of running one and not the other. I assume if I only get one set, I want them on my drivetrain wheels (rear), but then that would only help with fishtailing and not braking as much (from what I understand).

Any help or links are appreciated! Remember, I have a 2wd XJ and will be climbing snowy mountains!

EDIT: I talked to my dad about it and he said snow chains and cables just kill tires and that i'd be better off with a 20lb bag of kitty litter over each of the rear wheels, as long as I drive smart. Anyone have a response to that?

Run the cables on front wheels in 4wd. Will drive great. Stay slow. I've done 50 with cables but probably not safe. They don't hurt tires

Saw u have 2wd. Ur fine to only run cables in rear. Weight will help too but don't worry about that too much.
