Long distance drives
So I'm gonna be driving my 2000 xj with 3 inch lift with 31 inch tires down to florida this march from new jersey. currently I'm getting an average 13mpg combined city/highway.
I'm looking to get better mileage for the 2,600 mile round trip drive. I have a set of stock tires im most likely gonna thrown on for the week. I was wondering if anyone else has taken there jeeps on long drives and what you guys have done to maximize your mpg's.
thanks

i drove across the country one summer.
on summer gas, 35" tires, automatic tranny and 5.38 gears i got about 15 mpg pretty consistently. Not bad for a built xj loaded up with 3 guys, my tools and spare parts and luggage occupying every inch of the cargo area and then some.
i just gave her a tune up and all new fluids before i left and kept it at about 65 mph.
they say synthetic fluid in the rearends is good for a mpg or 2, but i never noticed anything.

The cruise control doesn't work above 85.... Our Cherokees aren't that bad on the highway. Acura Integra, Honda Odyssey, Honda Pilot, Honda Accord are all noticeably louder going 65.

I have almost the same setup as you, close to 3" with 31" tires. AW4 tranny and 4.10 gears gets me 20-21 going 65 with no hills.
Make sure your tires aren't under inflated, clean your throttle body and change your spark plugs. Also, don't cruise above 65 if you are aiming for efficiency.

Whenever my MPG sucks I clean out the air filter and max out the tire pressure. It makes a huge difference, the Jeep just rolls along without much effort.
x2 on the 65mph as well. 65 vs 75 might not seem like a big difference, but you'll notice it at the pump
