My Girlfriend and i decided to move to Alaska from Virginia.

put her jetta on a dolley and loaded both cars full to the rafters with everything we owned.

Then it was time for Canada...thats when it started to go downhill...
we had to sit at the border for about 4 hours while they searched through all our **** because they thought i had a pistol in the car...i didn't.
First night in Canada the jeep got broken into. they stole iPad, macbook, iPod, Cannon ios camera, my gf's entire suitcase, my survival backpack, .410 shotgun, .22 rifle and more....

filed police report. fixed the window and took off. A day or 2 later our gps took us in on some dirt road for a while..not bad.

then that led into forest roads. too late to turn around for gas so we kept going. It was very nerve racking, lots of bumps and in the middle of the forest.

But we made it out and saw a glacier not too long after.

Lots of bears!

Then on the road we could hear some noise from the right rear. Diff fluid was leaking out so i pulled the tire off... e-brake was demolished and i noticed the axle had a lot of play. bearing/seal was shot. But we were in the middle of nowhere so we didn't have a lot of options so we drove on. Cruising down a big hill and the right rear tire fell off and we skid about 100 yards. It was terrifying cause their were steep cliffs on the side of the road. But we were alive! Shaken up we unloaded the cars and put what was important into the jetta. Unhooked the trailer from the jeep, put it in 4wd and backed it up the hill and onto the side of the road...

Wouldn't have been too hard to swap a new axle on..if i could have found one. we tried. but after a day or so we decided to cut our losses and leave it. sad times.

Crazy story. Kinda wierd, first night in Canada and your **** gets stolen. That's so un-Canadian.

At least you only left a Grand Cherokee there. Not an XJ.

I was really surprised at how well the ZJ towed!! 4k miles and it did awesome. but the combo of it being loaded down and pulling a trailer on that bumpy pothole filled road just destroyed the axle...
So the jetta turned into the expedition jetta.
got a flat tire and had to buy 2 tires in whitehorse...

So, you have no intentions of going back to get it? What happened to the dolly?!

Why'd you move to Alaska?

I'd like to have his disposable income if he can afford to just leave a vehicle on the side of the road...

That's what I'm thinkin.

You can afford to leave it on the side of the road but not afford to have it fixed?

I would have left it there long enough to find the parts to fix it and keep going.

i would love to go back and get the jeep...but i doubt its where i left it. Some people who own a hunting lodge about 30 miles from where the jeep died were nice enough to hold our dolly and the rest of the stuff we couldn't fit in the car.

haha i wish i did! nope. it would have cost about 1000 just to tow it to a hunting lodge nearby... then i would of had to find an axle in Vancouver and have it shipped up the the lodge. It was really really tough to leave it.

i wish i could of. definitely couldn't afford it. it would have cost about 2-3k to fix it there. it was literally in the middle of nowhere.

Have you never seen that episode of "One Car too Far" where they limped a Wrangler through all kinds of **** with the same issue you have? The people at the farm place didn't have a truck you could pay them 50 bucks to let you borrow? Then go get the Jeep on the dolly? Did you at least tell the people at the hunting lodge they could have it if they went to get it? How long ago did you leave it there?

Either way, it's your Jeep. I would have never left it sitting there with no intentions of going to get it.

I'm sorry, stuff like this just blows my mind.

Oh man crappy luck! I'm in Alaska now and will be making that adventure on the Alcan next year. I feel your pain on having to just leave it there, it really is in the middle of no where! If you have never been here in Alaska or that far north in canada then you just wouldn't know. Now you should go buy yourself a XJ
