LED retrofit bulbs really made my Xj look more "modern" (at least to me).
I used Philips for the tail light bulbs, and Sylvania Zevo's for the turn signals and reverse lights.
The cheap chinese crap with 80 LED's on one board usually fail within a year or two, and will flicker instead of staying on, so I would avoid those and go with a large company with an actual lifetime warranty
