Seems people think if an XJ has low miles its worth a ton of $. Especially dealers, thats the way they think.
I bought mine from a dealer (albeit a small one, guy had like six cars for sale), a 98, 138000, mint (and I do mean mint) five new tires, never smoked in, not a mark on it or in it and the Carfax proved it was a one owner, female and all the maintenance records came with it. I even got the remote and manual for the aftermarket Pioneer deck with ipod interface. Guy was asking $5000, I had to ask him, "really?", I'd done my homework, I knew what it was worth. I picked it up for $3500 out the door, that included taxes, emission and inspection and licensing.
Those jokers in the CL adds need to look around before they post XJ's at such ridiculous prices.
A word of advice to those of you shopping for an XJ, patience is your friend. Do your homework, know exactly what your looking for, and look at a lot of them. It took me two months after I came up with the money to find mine (I wanted an untouched grocery getter), you'll know your Jeep when you see her.

Nice find then man, I was just about to turn 16 and eager to buy my first car...knowing I wanted an XJ, and NOT knowing much about cars in general, I allowed myself to get taken advantage of...slightly. I had about $2,100 saved, so me and my dad went and looked at a few. He's a gearhead so he knew what he was looking for. The cherokee I picked out was 2wd, 122k, and had it's signs of age...smoked in (yellow tobacco-y powder ALL OVER), stains in the seats and carpet, tears in the headliner, plastic interior trim all beat up, but man the thing ran NICE.
Anyways, paid $1,800 for it. I feel like I kinda got screwed, especially since gas was $4.19 at the time I bought it, the highest it's ever been in this area. Had I done some more research on XJs specifically, I couldve gotten a better deal.

Just because people post redic prices doesnt mean they are gona sell . . the person smoking crack is the person who will buy them without any research on the value
True, alot of the asking prices on craigslist ads have no basis when compared to real world values on Edmunds, KBB, or NADA. An additional fact could be the sellers are way over entended when it comes to debt, and are hoping to dig themselves out of the hole. In the end that 1999 will probably sell for ~ $6000.

" I hate to let this jeep go, as I love Cherokees and would keep it if I could, but It's not smart for me to have two jeeps right now"
never trust a man that thinks it not smart to have more than one jeep.
