Thought this might be a good thread to create, a spot to share your Jeep tricks. What I mean by that is when you are fixing your jeep the little things that make your life so much easier that we can all share so the fixing your jeep is less of a chore with bloody Knuckles and plenty of swearing (out loud or to your self!)
Over the weekend I replaced my rear shocks on my Xj. I happen to have ball pin eliminators. How many of you have installed these and thought to your self this is the last time I'm going to have to deal with those pesky M8 bolts that bolt up your shocks, only to realize the next time you go to do your shocks and try to push the shock to the top mount that it is squashed in too far and you think to you self that ball pin elimators are all lies! And your suffering from delusions of grandeur!
Fear not! I have a simple solution to this problem. You just need a bolt with threading that is longer than the width of the top of the loop hole on your shock and two nuts. It's a little easier if your bolts width is smaller than the holes. Simply slide the bolt in the first hole and then I between the two tabs screw on both nuts. Screw until the tip of the bolt just clears the hole one the opposite tab. Now adjust the first nut so that it is snug against the first tab. Then grab a couple wrenches and tighten the nut that is snug on the first tab and keep tightening it until the loop hole and bushing will clear (check by holding it up to the two tabs) and voilą it's ready to accept your shock.
It is my opinion that this is much easier than trying to mess with those pesky 8 mm bolts you're going to have to spread the two tabs anyway when you get the ball in eliminators of so you might as well do it on the vehicle useing this method. I hope this helps you guys!
Next order of business is movie along towards the front cleaning up surface rust and swapping transfer cases the case from my old jeep, "Jeepie" (rip) has a hack n tap sye and I'd rather swap than hack n' tap all over again. And then adding the long arm cross member! (From serious offroad, excellent custermer service btw) If I come up with any more clever tricks along the way I will surely post up!
