Installing a 5.2L engine into a 2001 Grand Cherokee

Default Installing a 5.2L engine into a 2001 Grand Cherokee

Has anyone removed a 4.7L engine and installed a 5.2L V8 in a 2001 Grand Cherokee?
I would think it would bolt onto the tranny and on the existing motor mount locations but I'm sure the wiring/PCM would be different.

You'd have to buy aftermarket motor mounts anyway. It can be done, but the logistics of the electronics will give you nightmares.

Thank you guys I'm just going to rebuild the 4.7L because the Jeep is well worth a new motor.

If you are intent on swapping the engine, look into the 5.7 Hemi which IS used in the Grand Cherokees.

Dave if you have noticed the Hemi's that came in them have more repair issues than the later model 02-04 4.7's had don't know about the new ones of the last couple of yrs. I do know for a fact that my 4.7 can outrun a Hemi in the 1/4mi. did it several times at the track with over 200,000mi. on it. Gearing may have had a bit to do with that (my 3.73) also I don't what they had the driver didn't either.


I'm the offbeat one I would rebuild my 4.7 in a min. if needed because of overall condition and the last of the good Grand's.

I'm with you, Fred! Today it's better to rebuild what you've got rather than swap something into it that wasn't designed to be there. Unless you're not going to drive it on the road, doing engine swaps like we used to do in the old days is just too complicated, classic street machines aside. I haven't seen many fuel injected hot rods, have you?

Dave my Wagon is injected with twin turbo and the wife's Mustang with the 572ci. BBC is also 2 different types of injection used.


But no nothing like the old days when anything went, but you can still build a stout SBC in the 550-590 HP range for under $6-8k depending on parts roller mtrs.

Yes, I'm very well acquainted with the SBC. I know more about them than any other motor. I STILL can't tell the difference between a 305 crank and a 350 crank without having them side-by-side!

The 305 crank usually has a chain on it with a boat attached to the end of it.

LMAO!! Yeah, that too! 302,305,307. The only GOOD one was the 302! I haven't a clue what Chevy had in mind building such junk.

The 302 was so they could race in trans am,The 305 was ok the 307 was junk tho.

The 305 was junk. The bore was too small and shrouded the valves, no matter what you did to it, it couldn't breathe to make any power. I think the 307 was the better engine. Still crap though.

I am not a race kind if guy so speed and power isn't important. I put a 307 in a 56 Sedan Delivery back in the day. Best engine I have ever owned. Reliable and efficient. I'd get 30mpg at times. It idled so smooth as to be imperceptible. Several times I pulled the key out of the ignition without turning it off and went in to work, not realizing it was still running. I worked at a restaurant and parked in the lot. Co-workers parked next to me and came in and told me it was still running.
This is a very interesting topic though. Given all the stories we read here about the 4.7's. I have thought how nice it would be to have the WJ body with a simpler and less controversial engine in it. A full cast iron engine and heads would be a big improvement with out all the computer driven mumbo jumbo..
