With that info blue book on it here is $3200 in good condition and that's about 500 or so more than I'd pay for it. Just curious why he's replacing the motor and is the motor rebuilt or a jy motor with unknown mileage.

I'm with XJMarc on this one. The dude is a mechanic, this is his personal vehicle and he was only able to get 93k out of the original motor? If you change the fluids occaisionally and keep the temps under 240 these motors will go 300k+. What else has been neglected from a maintenance perspective?

Late '99 and up 4.0L have a tendency to crack heads for no real reason other than a bad design. It's very easy for this problem to hide from even the seasoned mechanic until it's too late.
Find out the specifics on the new motor. Still sounds like a good price to me if the condition of the rest of the vehicle is good ( shiny paint/clean interior) and if you're serious about buying tell him you want input on the motor, such as asking him to replace gaskets (rear main), new fluids, plugs/wires and such. And if he is a good mechanic and actually doing all these things ask him to warranty his work for 90 days.
