Assuming that both the 2.5L and 4.0L were manufactured with the same quality materials and workmanship, when it comes to longevity my money will be on the 4.0L every time. The inline six engine configuration is inherently superior in harmonic balance, so it simply won't vibrate itself apart as quickly.

Iron duke was a GM engine that AMC/Jeep used in earlier models.
The AMC 4 cylinder is actually a 2.46L engine. Nowhere near as tough as the 4.0.

Not to mention the 2.5 Cherokee's are way under powered.
I have VW buses pass me on the highway.
However!
I am prayin that this new little 2.9-3.0? will have a little more ummph.
