Default I'm new,I don't know what to do!

Hey everyone!
I just joined, but I have read a bunch of older threds. Most of them had something to do with the problems I'm experiencing with my cherokee.

Before I get to the problems, I am confused about the xj thing. I see several people have asked and most answers are Cherokee = xj.

I have a 1989 jeep cherokee straight 6 4.0. On the driver side firewall, on the manufacturer's name plate in the tip right corner, it says XD. Can anyone explain this?

Thanks,
I was trying to check some sensors today, started with map it was good. Went to tps and wasn't sure which plug I was supposed to be checking. I checked both but one was the correct specs only backwards the other only went up to about 3.4 instead of 5. I got lucky because auto store had it in stock.

Welcome to the forum,
You my friend have a Renix era (84-90) Cherokee XJ. There is a member on here who is the guru when it comes to this era jeep goes by the name of Cruiser54. He even has his own site http://cruiser54.com as he would and likely will suggest, always start with tips 1, 3, 4, and 5. But give a good read over everything on there it's quite helpful.

Again welcome to the forum and enjoy the addiction.

When a car company makes anything they give it a chassis code,That code will change every time they fully redesign the car and keep the name. The cherokee name has had 3 chassis codes,The first cherokee was 74-83 and a fsj chassis code,Next the xj was made 84 to 01 and the 2014 and newer one is a KL.

Yessir!! 1 through 5 for an 88 because of the pesky C101 connector. The ground for the MAP needs to be good and many times isn't. Tip 5 specifically addresses that.

Boxspring, feel free to post up your specific issues in the meantime. Tomorrow is Saturday. Good time to complete 1 through 5......

Welcome.. We'll have your Renix Jeep figured out in no time.

Default Hey guys thanks, for the response!

Well I don't really know where to begin.

When I try to start the Jeep it takes about eight or nine seconds. ( I tried turning the key to on position then back off or waiting and I didn't see any result really) Then I only have maybe 20 or 30 minutes before it'll stutter and seem to be to hot and shutdown. It won't start again for like an hour.

I can only move around by treating the transmission like a stick, even though it's an auto.

If I step on the gas pedal more than she wants, she will just bog out.

I replaced the tps yesterday( Today I read on cruiser 54's page about adjusting the tps. Step 1 throttle body needs to been cleaned recently. So I did that this evening.)and found no ohms across the O2 sensor. I pulled the O2 sensor to confirm my test and didn't put it back in. I ran it down the road a mile or two and let it idol another 20 mins, it seemed ok. This morning just about to work and it started running badly. I called au to store, guy said it would be there at 3pm. After work I putter to the store manipulating gas pedal. Can't get enough speed up to get out if 1st gear. No part, factory order won't have it till the 10th. While the engine cooled I put the old O2 sensor back in and pulled the negative terminal off the battery, to reset the brainx, It seemed to stop the putters.

You need to DO the Tips, not just read them. Trust me.

Get those done and then we'll move on to the shifting etc.

Sorry, I tried to to get the 1-5 done over last weekend. I'm nursing a Acl reconstructive surgery and had a birthday to attend. I did complete step 1. No excuses, I'll get it done this weekend. I picked up the new O2 sensor. After I replace O2 sensor, complete 3, 4 and 5 and set tps is there a standard rpm for my xj 4.0 engine idle?

About 800 RPM in neutral.

Yes sir, 3 x's a week. Much fun! OK finished with 1,3,4,5,7 and 8. My cps is only 2.3, it still takes a while to start. I tried cutting down the idol but turning the tps is not helping. It's like 1600 rpm. ????
