Iv asked a few guys on the forum but I need to be 100% sure...

My brakes were bad to where you had to press really hard to stop, I changed and flushed the brake fluid and it was sludge. New fluid and it's just as bad if not a little worse. You have to SLAM the brakes to come to a slow stop. I almost wrecked because of this. There is NO air in the lines so that's not it. Some said it's the booster but I wana be 100% before I buy one. Anything else it could be? Also if it is the booster they said to get one from a grand, what ones will fit my 89 XJ? JY or eBay? Help plz

What about the soft lines? Sounds like something is gunked up. I would blow out the hard lines with the soft lines disconnected. You might also want to invest in new soft lines, calipers, and brake cylinders.

As for the brake booster I'm not sure what years. I swapped the booster out of a '98 XJ into my '92. The rod was about a half in long, cut a chunk out and welded it up and it works great. I think the '95 - '97 XJ booster has the same length shaft as the single diaphragm booster and should work fine.

Ok, when I bled the brakes Id open the bleed valve, press the brakes down slow, then close it and let go of the brakes. Then open, press slow to floor, close and release. Repeat repeat.. That is right isn't it? The calipers compress good and the pads still have about an inch of padding left

An inch of pad? Really? On each individual pad or an inch of pad per caliper?
Also, check herehttp://www.ehow.com/how-does_4829365...-boosters.html
to see how to test your brake booster.

95'-96' is supposed to fit with the least modification. IIRC you will need to pull the pedal also but that just makes it easier otherwise you have to test the electrics or something. I know there is a write up on it somewhere.

I had to adjust the brake light switch, that's about it other than shortening the rod.

Could this be caused by a vacuum problem? I have a suspicion I might have something wrong with the whole vacuum system in my jeep

There is only one vacuum line for you booster? Is that line hooked up?

And does it change when your xj is on or off?

Soft lines as in the ones going to the calliper? Not new, but they look good.
