Default How much should I offer?

I'm looking to buy a new xj. I currently have a '91 xj but I would rather a '97+ to turn into a DD/weekender. Most of the driving would be in city or on freeway and I like the comfort of the '97+ for that reason. But I do a lot of winter sports and camping/backpacking so icy roads and mountain service trails are not a rare occurrence.

I've found a '99 for sale in my area, and though the prices are high in my area generally, $6500 for a '99 with 120k miles seems steep. Assuming the rust-check, road test, and shop inspection go well, what do you think this '99 is worth?

Thanks!

I'd try for $4000. I've seen a lot go for more. It's tough because it's a dealer, or at least looks like it is.

I don't know how much they are willing to bend.

Don't know why but XJs go for much more here in CA than anywhere else. I'd shoot low. Point out as many things wrong with it as you possibly can.

Yeah look it over really good inside and out,And look for anything wrong from scratches and dents to like a power window or lock switch not working. Most lots price stuff high so you have room to talk them down and feel like you got a deal.

X2 I payed $3400 for my 2001 with the same mileage from the original owner. Dealerships sell them for $6K+ around here for that kind of year and mileage in chicago.

Thanks for the advice. I agree, for a stock body I want to get it down to around 4k if I can. The market is definitely expensive here in California though. Probably won't end up with this one.

Speaking of:

If anyone knows a 97+ with the NP242 in the area, let me know. Plan to lift around 3" (RE 3.5" looked good). 31" tires, re-gear to 4.11, and try to find an 8.25 or D44, though it sounds like the 97+ has less room under the fenders and might not fit the 31's? Eventually a roof rack and new bumpers with the rear spare tire mount. Some trips I take a lot of gear and need every inch.
