I put in the Rough Country 6.5 inch lift with 33" tires and I still had to trim a little bit of the plastic away:

It's going to be really hard to get 35's under there without a good amount of trimming. Skyjacker makes an 8 inch lift kit and that might give you enough room to only have to trim like me (if you're lucky and the 35" tires you get are closer to 34"). Then you have to compensate for off-road flex.

Bottom line: You're probably going to have to dig into your metal a decent amount to clear 35's. I'm not sure what you mean by "minor," however you will likely be trimmed above the fold where the flares are bolted into. You don't want to lift yourself too high or else your vehicle becomes a real danger to drive.

You could actually make them out of a trashcan's plastic. You would just need to heat up the plastic and shape it the way you want it. I've even seen people put swimming pool noodles up there. That's a cheap way to keep the tires away from the metal, but it looks odd.

Another option that may look good is going ahead and hacking into your metal and then fiber glassing the trim.
