What do you call low mileage tho?The 4.0 in the xj can run 300k fine if taken care of.Or get one dirt cheap that needs a engine and drop in a stroker.

To me, low mileage would be under 150k. I plan to have this thing for a long time, so I'd like it to last a long time as well

Took me 6 months and I'd check craigslist at least once every 2 hours. I had to find mine from a dealer so I could finance it though

I've been kinda looking out of state, but I live in CA so whatever I look at has to meet the CA emissions standards. Does anyone know if Jeep made all cherokees to meet CA emissions or did they make any 49 state cherokees?
good luck. not all cars were made to meet CA smog standards. you'll most likely at the very least need a CA legal cat. me and a buddy have played this game before, the vehicle ended up getting sold and green stickered

I'd definitely try to buy a vehicle that is already smogged and registered in CA

In SD (or with an hour drive) you should be able to find one pretty fast and easy.

I sure hope so! I'm checking CL pretty much constantly. Also checking AutoTrader, and ebay...

I've found a couple that look pretty good, but mileage is kinda high. There's a decent one at a local dealership that I might go check out, it's under $5k, but the mileage is around 215k which is really a bit higher than I like.

For me 200K miles would be the cutoff. It's interesting when I was looking the one with the lowest miles was also the oldest one. 1989 with 135K. Which also made it a pretty awesome deal.

I found mine by luck and knew I couldn't pass it up. The guy was asking $6K and I talked him down to $5,500 and was willing to pay the price for something nice.

Bone stock 99 (white) 4 door, NP231, clean interior, with a HP D30 / 8.25 and best of all... 92K miles!!! Unfortunately it spent a little time in illinois so it has a little bit of rust but nothing serious at all. I wasn't actually seriously looking when I found mine. I was kind of looking around for a few months before I pulled the trigger.

Shoot! If I could find that I'd leave work right now, go to the bank, and it would be mine haha.

Right!? I woulda been a fool to let it go. I've been broke but yet very happy ever since.

This is far, but it's what you're looking for.

Here's the search I ran... Distance from my zip (92109) is ANY and sorted by lowest mileage first.

By the way, that's exactly how I found mine... Sorted by lowest mileage first.

Oh yeah, and I was only looking 97 - 99 for that search. Not sure what years you're interested in, but I was just thinking HP D30.

I bought my last jeep at 215k. its the highest mileage jeep I've ever bought, it's also been the most reliable because it's been ran it's whole life. cars like to run, it keeps them healthy along with a lot of their parts.

figure 10k miles per year, for 20 years (mines a 94) and it runs ****, I haven't had to replace a thing it's all in great shape

my experience is be wary of an old jeep with really low miles. I bought a 93 with 110k on it and EVERYTHING was toasted internally. hoses and parts galore. I thought I was getting a sweet deal but the odds are if it's got really low miles, it's probably sat a few years

so, moral of the story, Cherokees really do like high miles

Damn! All the way out in PA though. That would be a long way to go unless I know 100% it's the one I buy. PA would be a bit of an unknown cause it's in the salt belt, so rust may be a factor. I'll try those search params though and see if I manage to find one closer.

Mine is pretty much that except white. Took me 2 days to find it. Granted, when I bought it, XJs were more plentiful, and though production of them was ending, one could still go to the dealer and pickup a brand new one. We've been together for a while
