I typically use a ratchet strap and try to ratchet it down, but there aren't many strong places on the floor of a Cherokee to hook a ratchet. How do ya'll do it?
I have a stock tire so I just lengthened the threaded rod in the back and bolt it in right there. Its nice because I store tow ropes and jumper cables behind it.
I just have it laying down in the back. I have anchor points waiting to buy off amazon but haven't pulled the trigger yet. It didn't move on the rubber mat that's in the back.

See the problem is when you flop things go flying. Last flop I had the cooler poured all over my passenger, but it was strapped is so it didn't fly and hit them.
BUT, if after such contemplation you decide you may still want to flop... I would get the hold down assembly out of an older Chevy. In my 79 Camaro there was a bracket spot welded to the trunk pan that a 'J' stud hooked through. Large wing nut and a washer through center of wheel to hold wheel down to stud. Best part, you can pull the spare and remove the 'J' stud and have a mostly flat trunk. A spot weld drill bit from HF and a trip to the junk yard. Should be able to pick the assembly up for just a few dollars.

In cargo area I installed six eye-bolts that are 3/8" diameter, with fender washers to spread the load. Mounted to where there are multiple layers of sheetmetal. Can see one mounted at top of wheel well, attached to interior metal. Another at rear of cargo area, in front of rear lens assembly, also mounted to interior metal. Two additional eye-bolts exit to underside of vehicle.
If you run whoops and jumps you better have your stuff strapped down, I learned the hard way. My tie down points were not for a spare tire but all the other stuff I may be carrying.
Spare what Spare!!! I always use the I've made it further on less method and it's all good lol... Only kidding I tie mine down on the luggage rack or throw it in the back and hope for the best.
Soon as I re-do the carpet in the back of my XJ, I am installing L-Track for securing things down in the storage area.
I have a bunch of this in one of my Wagoneers for that very purpose. In fact I have some on the interior side panels just bellow the quarter windows to hold my Hi-Lift jack. http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Ratche...traps-Hardware
