I'd like to lock it if at all possible.
I would rather not have spare attached to hatch. figure the rack will serve multiple purposes. I like that.
Any recommendation on rack type too?

Default mounting tire to roof rack securely

What do you mean by secure? I'd like the forums' opinion on this one too. Seen some mfgs with tire kits for racks, but they seem to be rack specific by mfg. I sure someone here has fabed one and can give us the skinny. Recommend mean dog and long chain.

Basket with a locking tire mount maybe. Or just use a standard basket + mount and pit a bicycle cable lock through it.

I guess you could weld it on. That'd be hilarious.

I use a sturdy cable and weather-proof padlock to lock my spare and Hi-Lift to my roof rack. The Hi-Lift is bolted down with a couple of u-bolts and spare with a couple of ratchet straps. Haven't had a problem in the couple of years since I moved it up there.

Like a stereo its not the value of it but what they tear up trying to steal it. I started to put one of the locking lug nuts on my swing out tire carrier but decided not to. I would rather replace a new tire $155 and wheel $80 instead of the other option. My bumper does have a built-in Hi-Lift jack carrier and I did lock it, its the ultimate with extras and easy to secure or steal its locked.

My roof rack is used for light weight items tools shovels, pick, spade and some camping chairs, coolers and a ladder so the wife can get it all down

Honestly ive used the solid ruber bungie type things for 4 years. I moved from a high crime city to the mountains an no ones touched my spares. Also kept the exta gas and the tow straps on the front bumper

When I worked at the mall I used to super glue quarters to floor just outside the kiosk. Good times.

A piece of steel cable and a pad lock sounds sufficient. Enough of a deterrent and also won't damage much if they hack it up and steal it anyways.

On mine, I have a Yakima loadwarrier basket with their tire kit inside. The crosshairs are locked to the roof tracks and the tire holder takes a padlock. I dont however have the basket locked to the crosshairs. I put a cover on the tire to keep snow and ice from building up inside.

I'm happy with how it works, but Yakima is awfully proud of their stuff.
