Default How deep do you go...WATER

So pretty much I have been wheelin' in a spot that has been the driest ever in about 5 years been doin some muddin' and trail ridin back there...Today we had a storm and well it is flooded like crazy I have been waiting for this for awhile but now when I went to look at it I am not so happy. I am not sure if i can make it to the mud so I went in some spots up to the bottom of my grill. How deep can I go and how do deep do you go PICTURES!! Here are mine of where I was playin it safe and.

this was a little deeper than I thought... hahaha when I pulled it out, I took the air filter out and it was wet. I turned it over and it sputtered for a sec and fired right up. Other than the wet muddy carpet it was fine! i usually check the depth first but a buddie on cf (no names hahaha) said i'd be fine

Hahaha I said the exact same thing to one of my friends and right once he broke the dried layer of mud he sunk up to his windows but that was mud not water... Anyways after seeing these it looks like my wheelin days are over until it dries because I will be having to go through water up to my hood.

Would a snorkel allow me to go deep even if I do not waterproof anything else.

wouldnt want to get the ECU wet, would definitely waterproof it somehow with some silicon or something, alternator might not like the water tho. and....distributor? Thats about all i could think of, probably more though

At some point the air filter will pass enough water to hydro lock the motor.

The pistons can compress air, but they cannot compress water.

Soooo the intake valve opens & sucks in the water, then closes. The piston begins to try to compress it but when it can't, something else has to give.

That may be the connecting rod. It might come out the side of the block.

Not trying to wish evil on you, but you should know the possible consequences.

This sucks I have to wait till summer for it to dry and it still might be flooded. There is no other place for me to go that is close by.

I try to stay away from water now... Had my Chevy pickup up to the bottom of the doors in water once. Since my XJ is my DD why risk locking up the engine and besides the only high water I see here is when it rains and the creeks over flow. At that point the water is rushing way too fast, don't want to risk getting washed away. Happens every time we get a good rain.

I had my 98 in water so deep that my side mirrors were about halfway under water and the hood was about 2 inches below the surface, the water hole was about 30 ft. long and mostly the same depth the whole time....the carpet was removed the next day and a new alternator was needed. I think i was veeery lucky to not have more damage, although there are some videos on youtube that show others have gotten away with similar situations

Ya I have seen some up to the bottom of windshield with nothing waterproofed or anything so I was not sure if I would be able to get away with it to but I decided not to take my chances guess I will just play in the tire deep water with no mud.

Yeah that is about how deep I was maybe a little deeper I will have my friend take some pictures while I am in the water so you can see. I am just trying to figure out what a safe depth is and I think I found it so hopefully I can find a path to the middle of swamp where it doesnt get to deep.
